The difference between storage containers and storage trailers

Storage trailers

Are you having trouble deciding between a storage container and a storage trailer? If so, you’ll want to give some thought to how much space you need, how long you’ll need the space for and whether or not you’ll need to transport your unit. Keep reading to learn more about storage containers and trailers.

Storage containers

A storage container is a large industrial-strength shipping box used for storing and transporting goods. They’re typically about 7 feet wide and range in length from 10, 20 to 40 feet. Because containers don’t have wheels or axles, they sit at ground level, so you’ll need to keep this in mind if you’ll be loading from a dock.

Storage containers can be equipped with a combination of shelving and pipe racks, depending on your needs. If you need to store multiple loads, store items over a long period of time, or store items that you’ll need to access periodically, then a shipping container is the way to go.

Storage trailers

Unlike storage containers, trailers are equipped with wheels and axles, making them easier to transport. They also rest at dock level so you can back up directly to a loading dock. If you need to transfer items from one warehouse to another, a trailer can cut down on the time and energy required to load and unload your freight.

Trailers come in 28, 32, 48- and 53-foot lengths, giving you more options depending on the amount of storage space you need. Trailers are also typically taller and wider than containers and don’t have interior shelving, which leaves more space for storing large items or pallets.

Container or trailer?

In most cases, choosing between renting a storage container and a storage trailer comes down to the amount of space you need and whether or not you’ll need to move the unit.

If you’re looking for convenient on-site storage that allows you to keep your freight organized, then a storage container is the way to go. But if the items you’re stowing are being loaded from a dock or need to be moved around your worksite or to another location, then a trailer would be the better option.
